Generally, the Bhai-dhuj is celebrated in the northern states of India, as a part of the five-day long Diwali festival. ‘Bhai’ means brother, ‘Dooj’ means second, thus ‘Bhai Dooj’ is a declaration of a sister’s protection for her brother and his well being. It is also known as ‘Bhav-Bij’, ‘Bhai Phota’ and ‘Bhai-Tika’. Do you know the legend behind Bhai Dooj? It is believed that, on this day Yama (Lord of Death) visited his sister (Yami), she warmly welcomed him by applying a tilak on his forehead. So the idea is that, anyone who receives a tilak from his sister on this day is saved from the agony of hell-fire. Another myth attached behind this celebration is that, after killing Narakasura Lord Krishna went to meet his sister Subhadra. She too welcomed him warmly by putting a tilak on his forehead as a ‘mark of victory’. Hence the day is considered as an auspicious occasion to strengthen the everlasting bond of love and affection between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters wake up early and decorate the Pooja Thali, put sacred tika on their brother’s forehead; which is followed by praying to the divine for his long and fruitful life. In turn, the brother promises to protect her from all hardships in life and gives Bhai Dooj gifts to his sister expressing his love. So, it is an occasion where brothers and sisters indulge themselves in gifting each other. There are various gifts specially meant for the occasion that are available in the market.
